Conventions of horror films
Horror conventions are gatherings of the community of fans of various forms of horror including horror cinema, goth lifestyle, and occasionally science fiction and fantasy. Historically the focus has been on the cinematic form rather than literature and art, but this has broadened to include all forms in recent years. People in attendance at a horror convention are traditionally known as members of the convention; invited celebrities including film directors and stars are commonly known as guests of the convention, though many professionals including directors will simply attend as members.
Horror films are designed to:* Frighten & panic
* Cause dread &alarm
* Evoke our hidden worst fears
* Captivate & entertain us in a liberating experience
* Often conclude in a terrifying shocking finale
Settings:
Settings can be set in dark alleyways, this could be where someone gets mugged or attacked, for example in Spiderman Mary jane gets attacked by thugs in an alleyway. Other examples of some settings would be Abandoned houses, these are normally very dark places with minimal light shown in these kind of scenes. Another example of a horror setting could be a cabin, such as the film Cabin in the woods. This was set in a woods in the country side near to virtually no-where, the twist of this film was that it was all set up in a weird dome, with no escape.
Character types:
The types of characters shown and represented in horror films are either creepy girls, you barely see their faces, they are always faced down and at moments they will slowly raise their faces for moments to scare the other characters in the film. Another character type would be the stupid/immoral teenagers that always get killed, these are normally college teens who drink and fail in life, generally the woman and nerdy boys. Another example would be the main protagonist, often the ‘victim/hero’ of the movie, they normally are the first face you see when the film starts.
